Redefining Storytelling with UHD and HDR Technology 

On October 2, 2024, the documentary Amazing China  premiered across various Chinese platforms, including CCTV4, in both 4K UHD and 8K UHD formats. This co-production between UWA members The Explorers and China Media Group marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France. The documentary provides an in-depth look into China’s cultural history, through advanced Ultra High Definition (UHD) and HDR Vivid technology. The co-production showcases a new standard for immersive media while highlighting global connections and cultural heritage. Additionally, “Amazing China” utilizes Audio Vivid technology, which enhances the overall experience by adding depth and authenticity to the narrative. 

How UHD and HDR Vivid Elevate Storytelling

UHD and HDR Vivid technology deliver high clarity and vivid color on par with cinema quality. UHD 8K resolution provides detail, allowing the viewer to experience the exquisite textures of ancient relics, resulting in life-like visuals. HDR Vivid, UWA’s proprietary standard, creates a nuanced and richer visual experience, which brings Amazing China’s storytelling to new heights.  

Documentaries like the BBC’s Planet Earth series, and The Explorers’ Earth Inventory series, shot in UHD and mastered in HDR, show that European broadcasters and production studios realize the value of UHD and HDR technologies in storytelling, enabling them to more closely represent the intense details and colors that one would see in real-life. Such content drives adoption of UHD technology, as home audiences seek to replicate these experiences in their living room. According to Omdia, nearly half of France’s households currently have an UHD TV set as their main TV, and since 2019, 4K adoption (i.e. the installed base of 4K TVs) has risen from 16.09% to 26.96% in 2023, which is forecast to rise further to 28.38% in 2028. 

Higher Co-Production Standards

As a piece of content produced by a European production company using UWA's UHD Standards, "Amazing China" is an example of future projects integrating technical advancements. With UHD adoption still growing, particularly in Europe, The Explorer's decision highlights the power of free, open-source standards, like HDR Vivid and Audio Vivid from UWA, democratizing high-quality viewing. The collaboration supported by UWA exemplifies how content creators can use UHD to elevate storytelling and set a new standard in engaging global audiences. Therefore, there is an incentive for content creators and production companies to invest more in 4K/HDR production workflows to differentiate their content in a highly competitive industry. 

In addition to accessing these free standards, the association's global member base provides networking opportunities encourages cross-cultural storytelling and maximizes the chances for continued UHD adoption.
